Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling

COURSE GOAL

To further educate health care providers in North Dakota on HIV and current testing procedures and improve their ability, in a variety of settings, to support clients in making behavioral changes that will reduce their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. The course is required for HIV CTR sites and preference will be given to their staff. This is a two day class that requires in person attendance.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The participant will:

  • Broaden their knowledge of HIV and current testing procedures.
  • Become familiar with the counseling skills utilized during an HIV prevention counseling session.
  • Become familiar with the six steps of HIV prevention counseling.

Obtain skills pertinent to providing clients with HIV test results. Note that Health care providers who provide HIV testing and who have not received the initial certification in HIV prevention (i.e., risk reduction) counseling, or who have gone five or more years without an update, are highly encouraged to attend. The HIV Clinical Training Program

The program consists of didactic sessions and rotations at various clinical sites throughout the Denver-metro area. Each training is individualized, to the extent possible, to meet the professional learning goals, practice needs, and interests of the participant. Support for Attendance
